I am search of a good quality vendor for flies. I am replacing all the flies I had in one purchase. I lost about 450 dozen in a house fire (a real bug zapper).

I sell only Montana Fly Co. flies in my shop and have been extremely happy with them. Their website is http://www.montanafly.com check them out and if you have any questions let me know.

One small issue, I am not a retailer and I do not have a tax ID… these are for me.

I’ll write them and let them know my situation and the amount of flies that I have to purchase. Folks have been great trying to help me get back on the water.

I have bought flies from http://www.troutflies.com/ and found them very easy to deal with.  They have what appears to be good prices on quality flies, plus some very interesting high quality artsey flies.  If you buy on the internet, most of the time you don’t pay taxes anyway, so that should not be an issue.  I would call them and tell them your situation.  I’m sure they could put together a bulk package for you.

Also take some time at his site to view some of the photographs of flies.  This is how he started in the business and it just sort of evolved into the fly selling business.  He also has some amazing toutorials on how to tie different flies.  His toutorial on a hopper fly is 45 steps with a photo of each step.

Thanks for the tips. I need to buy right now because tying over 4000 flies is just a little overwhelming for me. I tie a pretty good fly but I’m not up to the 100 dozen at a time stats like A.K. talks about in his books 🙂

Why in the hell do you need to have more than 4000 flies right now?

Some BWO’s for now, maybe some midges, a worm or two for good measure.

I don’t want to speak for anyone, but I personally would completely understand the desire to get right back to where I was at following a major loss.

I think it is interesting that Kevin was able to hold on to at least one rod thanks to it being in his car.

I truly understand what Lando is saying – it is really kind of like riding light. This one is on a time frame for insurance money –

Kevin, welcome to the board and sorry to hear about your unfortunate tragedy.  I completely understand the need to replace your flies, that is a HUGE loss to any fly fisherman.  Since you are going to need to get restocked for insurance purposes I would recommend calling any one of the above sights or others you have used in the past and discuss the issue and see if they are willing to put together a mega-order and give you a discount in the process.  I’m sure you could work out some sort of deal with them since you are going to be making such a big purchase.

By the way and FYI, my favorite online site lately has been Bearsden.com http://www.bearsden.com.

flies from Umpqua feather merchants are probably the best commercial flies out there… they have dealers all over the country the flies are tied on good hooks with good materials.
