Denver in September

Hi Guys,

A good chance that I may be in Denver this September for a week or so.  I am keen to do a bit of fishing while I am there and would appreciate any recommendations on must fish places.

A couple ideas – please feel free to shoot down:

1.  Gunnison River Black Canyon float trip
2.  Catch a wild brookie or 2 – size not important
3.  Catch a wild cut or 2 – size not important

Any advice or recommendations appreciated – feel free to PM me if you don’t want to post on the forum.

I did a float on the roaring fork in sept a few years ago.

Tossing big streamers against the bank. One of the best days out for me. 80 and blue bird skies all day and 4″ of snow that night.

I’ve always wanted to do the Black Canyon so my vote would go there for your options.

Any small stream should have brookies. Tiger Road outside Breck is loaded with them. That was my go to spot for brookies on a 1wt after work.

Darryl if you are fishing the Gunnison with a guide I would highly recommend a guide by the name of Nicolas Gibb. Great person and a really good guide. I will see if I can hunt down his contact info and PM it to you.

Thanks very much Rob, I will be a bit limited ito what gear I can bring along so I guess the light sticks will have to stay at home. The brookies will just have to deal with being caught on a 5wt or 6wt

The Gunnison is about 8 hours from Denver (by car), just to keep in mind.

For what it’s worth, Cheeseman Canyon of the S. Platte is an easy day trip from Denver.

Plenty of choices, floating the Gunny can be fun but tough to do without a guide unless you head to pleasure park, fun place and headed there in June to chase the Salmonflies

Not sure about 8 hours, cottonwood pass opened it’s 4 1/2, or through monarch pass 4 1/2-5 into the canyon.

Maybe by google maps it is, but I’ve never made it there that fast.

I’m guessing it’s tough to find someone that would rent you a boat and oars to float that river.

At last, I have been trying for the last couple of weeks to reply to PM’s and post with no luck – the forum allows me to browse but as soon as I try and reply it times out – not sure why? Apologies for the late reply, I was not being rude.

Anyway thanks for your reply Mark, I would not do the Gunnison without a guide as besides my non-existant rapid running skills I wouldn’t know where to put in and take out.

Head to Rocky Mnt National Park for cut’s and brookies. The Black cayon is a long ways from Denver. You can fish South Platte”Deckers” Cheeseman Cayon. The Blue. These are all within 2 hrs of Denver

The closest true Western Slope fishing is the S. Platte via Cheeseman Canyon.
