Davy Knot Unease

Hey guys –
I popped my fly knot on a very big fish yesterday on the strike, and I think it was the Davy Knot that caused it.

Just out of curiosity, had you trimmed the tag flush with the knot, or did you leave a little overhang for just such a hard set?

Feel you are undergunning.??? The clinch or Davy is not the appropriate knot for streamer or large nymph fishing. It is perhaps adequate in most cases but certainly not for undersized tippet on a large hook eye with a big fish. That’s what, a size 6 hook? Maybe a 4? 3x is too small for that eye with the above knots. The conventional wisdom is 2x for size 6,8,10 and 1x for size 2,6,8.
Let me know if I’ve got the above wrong. I’d be using a non-slip loop knot. Try it and see if you like it better for your application.

On tackle that large, I use a Palomar knot.

Thats about right, diameter of mono should be related in some way to the hook size used and more to the point the expected size of fish you may enounter. BStrain.
I have used that knot for Tarpon and other very large fish, with no problem. And down to 12 x.Either way accept there is no 100%perfect knot and the human element here is also a serious consideration when setting the hook.
