MemberHey guys,
So I’m basically sold on getting a Nikon DSLR and I want to start with a good everyday camera I can use hard and beat up a bit when I fish.

MemberMark,
I am no photography expert, but I did happen to post a very similar question a few weeks back while shopping for a SLR for my wife. I ended up getting her the D60, which in my opinion is the way to go. It is a bit more expensive, but according to my wife and others with whom I have spoken, there are many more options available on the D60 than the D40. By “options” I mean different ISO settings etc. The kit lens that comes with the D60 is a VR lens as well. Additionally, the D60 has a dust reduction system that seems to work very well. In any event, my wife loves her D60, and I can let you know where I ordered it from if you would like. I don’t think that Zach has any issue with me posting the site but just email me at whitfieldd@gmail.com and I can give it to you. The link to my thread is below and is worth a read as it addresses your question.
Now, if I can just get my wife on the stream with me to take some pics…

MemberMark,
I agree with what David said. I just bought the D60 for the same reasons. While it is more expensive than the D40, I found it to be cheaper than the D40x everywhere I looked. That being said, I am no photography expert either. This is my first DSLR, so I have no room to comment on what is good and what is not.Nov 5, 2008 at 3:08 am #65354Aaron Otto

MemberMark, I think that’s a fair deal and a good camera. I don’t think you’ll get much use out of the 55-200 for fishing photography though.
This is a good deal too with free shipping:

MemberI use a 12-24 and a 24-85 and I really like that kit for a DX format camera.
