    Hey guys –

Ken Rockwell is reporting that the D3x – which is by no means confirmed – will have a 1.1x sensor magnification.

The only reason Nikon needs to do a full frame model is to compete with Canon in the Pro and prestige market, they were the “Pros Choice” forever. These 35mm style cameras or what I consider “hand cameras”. I use a medium format style camera with a 22 megapixel digital back. I think you will see the cost of these backs drop over time and people looking for quality akin to medium and large format film will move up to these system.

I use a D2Xs sometime and its a cool camera for really active subjects, just like having a top of the line 35mm film camera but it just can’t compete with a medium format style setup when it comes to image quality. I would love to see some fly fishing shots on a Hasselblad digital camera outfit. The jump in quality is astounding.

    Sorry Zach,
It was a live link earlier today, somebody must have made them pull it down.
In a nutshell the post was from a guy who attended a closed door demo of the new D3.

I think it’s unlikely that Nikon will go with a 1.1x format. Their approach to date has been to standardize with the 1.5x DX format.

I think there’s room for a FF in Nikon’s lineup, but I don’t think DX is dead. The technology will contiunue to improve, the cost of FF will drop, and the image quality that can be had from a DX sized sensor will get better – and not necessarily due to more pixels. (Think noise, dynamic range, high and low ISO).

While it’s fun to speculate, and there’s certainly no shortage of it on the internet, we really won’t know until we know. If Nikon is true to form, whatever’s next will be killer, and fit nicely in between their main competitor’s offerings.
