How is the picture quality and/or other considerations different… better or worse…. between, say, a 6 mp point and shoot compact camera from a 6 mp digital SLR, say a Nikon D70?

Some of the point-and-shoot digital camera models are pretty damn impressive. Since you didn’t mention any names or camera models, we will just assume its a generic 6 MP camera.

I would venture to guess – on average – the difference would not be that great. Obviously, the D70 or any other DSLR is going to allow you many more creative choices during the capture, however. The only other difference would be the optical quality of the lenses. Most point-and-shoot cameras have lenses with optics of questionable quality while others are quite good. With a DSLR, you can choose the best quality glass for resolving power, contrast, etc.

    rstrouts,

The image quality difference can be dramatic between a 6mp SLR and a 6mp point and shoot. Most point and shoot dit cams use a sensor that is considerably smalller then a comparable SLR. This means, even though they are capturing the same mega pixel image size, the larger sensor on the SLR is going to produce an image with much better overall resolution and sharpness.

As an example, I have an HP 4mp p&s that I take out on the creek with me for snapshots. It produces a file in its best mode of 540kb. My Nikon D2h is a 4.5mp camera and its file size is 2mb. That’s nearly four times the file size of the HP.
