I remember seeing that a few months ago. 34 pounds not mention what kind of support you’d need.
    Ouch

The new 150-500 OS/HSM looks intriguing as well, although I’m not crazy about the f5-6.3. Thats a bit slow for my liking.

I knew the thing was big….but after watching Scott’s youtube link….that thing is HUGE! So big in fact….that I think it has very limited applications. Couple that with a price well in excess of $10,000 and I don’t see them selling a lot of them. I’m sure there will be a some folks with size envy that will buy one. I’d have to go with the Nikon 200-400mm and a TC at half the price.

It could be a fantastic lens for sports shooters. The zoom unlike primes will enable them compose as the action draws near or moves away and perhaps more importantly it offers f2.8. Compare that say to the 500 f4.

If I had to cover some twilight, night games maybe like soccer/football I might be all over a lens like that. Fast enough that you can open the lens as wide as youd need to freeze the action and versatile enough that you can shoot at 200mm one minute and 500mm the next as the action goes down field.

Few if any zooms are available in fast glass. I know from trying todo my daughters gymnastic where I use an 85 f1.8, the one thing I dont like is the fixed focal length. Sometimes shes too close and sometimes too far for the 85 but its the only glass I have thats fast enough to use for indoor sports.

On the plus side, carrying a lens like that would assure you of all the finest attention at any airport you visited.

John, have you looked at the nikon 80-200 AFS VR 2.8? (sigma makes an AFS non VR that’s not too awful bad (about $900)) That should do it… VR really does help sometimes… 1-2 stops in real life…

    Im Canon Labrati. Currently with
    24-70 f2.8 L
    85 f1.8
    180 f3.5 macro
    400 f5.6L

I intend to add the 70-200 f2.8L IS to complete my lineup. I can only get so much past the warden though 🙂 so any new lens purchases are for down the road when the times is right, unless I want to sleep on the couch for a few months 🙂

then after that I can try to figure out how to get a 500 past her
    ;D

That lens would have been sweet before, but now that Nikon brought out the D3/D300 it’s pointless. I’d just bump the ISO up another stop.
BTW – there is a Canon 70-200 2.8 LIS listed on Sportsshooter for $825 if anyone is interested.

I think I’m gonna get a bushnell elite 80mm spotting scope (30x-60x zoom) which is equivelent to a 1500-3000mm lens (I think) should be around f10 and only $750 with tmount and eyepeice adaptor.

digiscoping is cool, just remember that the lens (scope) final elements were designed for smaller than aps sized sensors (your eyes) at a “film plane” right at the eyepiece, so its very difficult to avoid the scope barrel ring, but, just crop.
