    Was wondering if anyone has suggestions for a decent priced cauterizer?

    Feather-craft has some for 24.99 and Enrico Puglisi has some for sale for 19.99. Just add some AA batteries and they work great.

    Dumb Question;
    What are you using them for?
    I have heard of people reclaiming hooks with them, by burning off the material.

    I use mine all the time.  They are wonderful tools for burning small “divots” in hair flies which in turn act as a repository for Goop/AquaSeal/QuickGrip, which in turn allows a rounded eye to be placed securely without “squishing” the adhesive.  I use them on woolhead flies, TWM’s, EP flies and also deer head flies (see below).  Furthermore, this tool is awesome for “poking” holes in to foam flies whenever you need to pierce the foam with a hook point – in other words you burn a small hole and then the hook point simply slides in without “stretching or tearing” the foam.

    The flies below all employed a cauterized eye divot.  Notice the rounded eyes first have the stems removed.

    It is also a good tool for burning an extra bit of space on foam dumbbell eyes for the Boobie fly pattern

    I was introduced to them watching Ward Bean use one on a wool head fly for the sockets.
