I have always heard that carp flies need to have little to no flash/shiny materials. So, then I buy Clouser’s book and run into the “Foxee Redd.” He uses bronze flashabou and gold krystal flash. Have I been mislead? Also, could you post some pics of the carp flies you have had some success with?
    thanks,
    Dusty

A friend of mine has had good results using a weighted olive woolie bugger with a little flash in it. What he learned is that by letting it sink to the bottom, then making short strips about one minute apart works. It’s excruciatingly slow, but it catches carp.
This one was big on a 4 wt. He went back to the same gravel pit with an 8wt and caught a 27 incher:

Here are some of my favorite flies to use.

As for the flash in the fly it just depends. As you can see in the clouser there is some flash tied in, its actually midge krystal flash. I prefer to use flies with out flash though personally. There really is not right or wrong to it. Everything just comes down to the situation at hand. This guy I took on a fly with no flash.

And this one I landed I took on a leech pattern with some rainbow flash in it.

So like I said it just all depends, there is no right or wrong.

After a year in Georgia I have finally located some carp water and will have the opportunity to fish some spots this spring.  I have been reading about this topic and also following the threads on carp flies.  I appreciate all the good information.

I have been practicing the Clouser Crayfish pattern basically because it is fun to tie and involves a few interesting skills I wanted to master.  My question is this – does this fly work for carp fishing and how do strip/retrieve if it does.

After I spot them tailing I try to get up stream of them and then cast up stream and past when the fly gets near I make shot strips to stir up the mud that’s when I get the most strikes.

Mark, have you used the Clouser Crayfish?  I am curious about that particular pattern.  However, I do appreciate all the good advice in general.
