MemberI need to take the plunge and get a waterproof P&S. I am spending too much time on the water to keep testing my old Canon P&S. With my clumsiness it is just a matter of time until the camera takes a swim. I have been doing my research and have looked at the Olympus and Pentax options. Seems like the new versions of the Olympus (the 8000 and 6000 Tough models) are not getting very good reviews. Every review seems to talk about very poor picture quality. Anyway, I just read that Canon has entered the waterproof/shockproof market with the Powershot D10. Looks a little more bulky than the others, but I have had good experience with Canon products. Just wondering if anyone here has heard anything or had any experience with them yet? They were just released and have only been on the market for a few weeks now. Any input is appreciated.

MemberShane,
Don’t have any experience with it but you can rent it from LensRentals.com for pretty cheap.

John BennettMemberShane it really depends on just what kind of quality your hoping for. Theres sacrifices in everything. The “toughs” look interesting but they are going to suffer the same problems as any other compact.
Next up are the “Pro-sumer” compacts. Camera’s like
Canon g10
Fuji f200
Lumix LX3Better image quality, more feature/funtions than compacts but still not the IQ of a DSLR once you start raising ISO above 200.
The G10 under ISO 200(and from what Ive seen the F200 and LX3) are phenominal and are still good at 400. But they arent waterproof.
If your not looking for top end IQ, I would think any of the WP compacts will make you happy.

MemberI can tell you that 4 guys on the crew that I tour with just bought the Canon G10, and I have been very impressed with the photos. I think it is a great camera for someone who wants to take a few quality snapshots.
I have the olympus 850 waterproof and I think it is a very good product for it’s intended use. I think a lot of people expect too much from a point and shoot. I read a lot of the reviews on these things, and a lot of us don’t take the time to learn everything that the camera is capable of, we just point and shoot. 😉 I keep mine in the boat only to capture memories and such, and if I want quality shots I take the dslr. I think the Olympus that I have is pretty good camera.

MemberI have a quality dSLR. I’m just looking for a P&S to capture memories as has been mentioned by others. The camera will stay in my fishing pack. I am aware of the downfalls of picture quality on P&S cameras. My main priority here is the waterproofness(?) and durability. I was hoping that with Canon entering this market that they might make a product that produces a little better picture quality that what was already out there.

MemberNeal Osborne wrote an article on what you can do with a waterproof digicam. It’s on his website:

MemberGood timing for this thread… I just dropped my point and shoot in the river tonight… It might dry out, we will have to see but I may be in the market as well…
