Hey guys –
Here’s my much-delayed report on the fishing on the Buffalo River over in Arkansas. I went last weekend to hang out with some guys on a quasi business trip; we floated from Steele Creek to Kyle’s Landing. The Buffalo is one of the most pristine, unbroken stretches of river in the country, but when the canoes are out, boy, you would never know it. I must have seen 500 canoes in the six mile float we covered. Some places they were so deep they were being double parked on the side of the river so people could take a leak, have lunch, etc.

I met some friends from high school halfway down–drank a beer with them–and wondered why they had been able to just pitch tents beside the river. Well, four hours later, I heard the local park rangers (the Buffalo is administered by the National Park Service) had caught up with them and given them all tickets.

On the balance, it was one of the worst *fishing* trips I’ve ever been on; I liken it to trying to cast between cars on a busy interstate. I managed to land a couple bluegill and that was it.

Moral of the story: don’t go fishing on an Arkansas canoeist’s stream on a beautiful day in mid-summer!
