Well Gary in truth eastern red cedar is a type of juniper so as such it has different properties. Like for instance western red cedar does not have as much color and it is much clearer. It also shapes much easier. As a result eastern red cedar makes for a much rarer boat. I can’t say that I have seen or heard of a cedar canoe made of the same. Though I would like to see one other than the ones I make.

As I have said before I am building one now of cypress and it is quite a different boat, in shape as well as color. I will post pictures of it after it is done. I think people might like to see it done as well.

Tks for the heads-up,
Not that I’,m going to build any more boats, too old! So is the bank account! Sold the last one, (34ft sloop), in 2002,
Now I have a plate alloy 16ft for a fishing platform, bought new!

I always wanted to build a bay boat out of western red cedar but never got there,
I’m sure a cedar/epoxy lofted boat would be light and travel with 1/2 the HP

I believe it would be without any doubt. I would search on line and see what all is available along those lines. Now I would like to see some pictures of the sloop. That would be very cool.

Most images have long gone but I did take a photo on my second to last voyage when she was at anchor at a place called Kingscote off Kangaroo island

I have a picture of her hanging on one of my walls, that is the best I can do unfortunately

I’m curious what the final weight turned out to be.

I would say right at 30#’s and no I never got around to it. I could make them to match any boat but as it is, it is just easier to go with someone like bending branches.
