Buffalo river float and fish?

Conner. I’ve not done the float so my info may be useless to you, but we are coming into the low water season. I’ve heard from a few folks that trying to do the last section in two days on low flows is not very fun. Right now they may have the water, but the story may be different in a month.
Check the national park service page on the buffalo for updates and bulletins before you go and some of the outfitters that service the area.
Miles Riley at Riley’s Station at the confluence of the White can also give you some good info. He has a few cabins across on the back side of the island from where the Buffalo comes into the White. Very nice family and quiet place to stay.
I finished this trip this weekend. I hope Zach gets to finish that article he mentioned because I would find it very interesting. The trip was awesome. It really is a beautiful river and is refreshing to be in a place like that. I think it was at least 100 degrees on each of the three days we canoed. The water was low but still floatable. There were many stretches of still or relatively still water. I have no idea as to the real number but I would guess that somewhere between 7 and 10 of the 33 miles were flat water with no basically no current. We also did out fair share of walking. It was a lot of work but it was a good time. Not the best time to do a canoe trip but at least we got some solitude.
The fishing was great. We had no idea as to how much progress we were making so we tried to hump it pretty good and consequently I did not fish or play with the camera as much as I would have liked. But each time we stopped to fish we hooked up pretty quickly. No big fish were caught but many were seen. The wildlife viewing was great as well. The place is a treasure.
I would be interested in taking another trip like that so if anybody has any suggestions for places like the Buffalo National Forest / River then please speak up. My wish list is as follows:
1. Relative solitude. No float and drink party places. I like alchohol as much or more then most but don’t want to be in a ‘party cove’ atmosphere.
2. Good fishing. No explanation needed.
3. A good long weekend trip. I hope to take a longer fishing vacation next year but it would be nice to squeeze one of these in too.
4. Relative safety. Something a couple of regular Joe’s can do without the need of guides or a lot of experience.I will try and post a pic later but I keep getting a message saying that it is too big.
