A co-worker and I had been planning a trip to the infamous Devils River for months when it fell through at the last minute due to camp site problems.  The Devils is known for it’s super clear water and the huge smallmouth that inhabit it.  With no river to float, we decided to try out the Brazos which is a short 2.5 hours outside of Dallas.  From recent reports from our customers, we were feeling pretty optimistic about the trip.  We floated the section just below Possum Kingdom Lake which is supposed to be the nicest stretch of the Brazos.

    Playing around with panoramic shots

The vessel for the trip was a 11ft cataraft which was perfect for storing all of our gear for the 3 day float.  With such low flows, the cataraft was difficult to get goin’ so we were working our asses of just to get the thing moving.

This river is home to a variety of species.  Spotted bass, largemouth bass, white bass, bluegill, striper, gar, and catfish are a few on the list.  We set out to catch bass and striper, and were successful for the most part.  During the day we were throwing a fly from Umpqua called the “meat whistle” and when the light was low we threw a variety of topwater flies.

    These things are INCREDIBLE!!

    Mornin’ Brew

    Another panoramic shot

Despite wet sleeping bags and wet clothes (from the relentless downpour our first night) the trip was awesome.  We caught a ton of fish and the river is beautiful.  For anyone in the area, I would recommend adding this float to your list.  I will try and post more pictures as I go through them.  Hope you enjoy!!

Wow, I love all of it! Great photos!

I hear you on the Devils trip, I have been planning to make it as well, but from what I hear, landowners on both sides of the river if caught on their property are not afraid to shoot.

I need to get back to Dallas and come in and shoot the s**t.

    Matt,

It’s nice to see some familiar waters — I make that float several times a year.

Dude, the coffee was sooo good.

Grant, I guess that it was good that we didn’t make it to the Devils after all.

Great shots – I love the detail stuff like the coffee and the close-ups of the flys..

    Very cool.

A picture is thousand words that takes less than a second while a thousand words is a picture that takes a month.

I think it would be awesome if we could get a trip together for the devils river. I would love to float the river with a couple of fly flingers instead of gear lovers. (my friends)

    Just something to ponder!

    Yo Matt,
You should send some of those images over to the Cataraft folks – they sure could use them! Shannon
