Three friends and I (all hardcore backcountry anglers) are mixing things up next summer (late June). We are planning to road bike 200 plus miles in Colorado from Idaho Springs -> over Berthoud Pass -> Winter Park -> Grand Lake -> over Trail Ridge Road in RMNP -> Estes Park -> Fort Collins -> Loveland -> and finish in Boulder.

Our objectives are to bike our *&^#$ off, stop on occasion to fly fish for trout, and visit a micro brewery each night for some liquid carbs. Anyone have recommendations for a) fishing locations and b) which microbreweries are a must do along this route?

While not a micro brewery, I would highly recommend stopping into New Belgium in Fort Collins.

Tommyknocker has a taphouse in Idaho Springs, and it is just down the street from Beaujo’s pizza, which I highly recommend.

I can only recommend the obvious places to fish, but the upper Colorado in the park is really fun to fish. Lots of aggressive browns. Big Thompson is my favorite on the east side of the park. Don’t overlook N. Fork of St. Vrain (though it may be a bit out of the way while on bikes).

I’ll recommend Twisted Pine Brewery in Boulder, it always satisfies for good beer. Fuel up on at Big City Burrito when you’re in Ft. Collins.

Avery Brewing in Boulder is a good bet as well.

Definitely hit the beer “triangle” in Fort Collins.

If you go thru Salida, there is a great brick-oven pizza place there with a great tap selection.

It’s going to be interesting to see how the fire up in the Big Thompson headwaters is going to affect the fishing down stream in the next few years…
Also getting a late start on building snowpack this year, run off may be done by the end of June, but it’s too early to tell.
