Cameron MortensonMemberThis post is mainly for Carter since he has mentioned a growing interest in fiberglass and using vintage reels. I picked up a Garcia Conolon eight and a half foot eight weight this past winter and then this week a reel for this rod arrived from a member on another board.
The reel is an old South Bend 1155. What a beast of a reel. The size, heft, and drag function of this reel is pretty amazing for it’s age. The reel nicely balances out that heavy eight weight rod. I was hoping that I could do some pond work with this outfit, but it is just to damn heavy for what I do. So this outfit will be used for the big fish trips…striper in the lake and river, salmon, and saltwater.

Carter…this outfit could do some work in the salt down in Texas. Just a thought. Fiberglass…it’s not just for trout.

Memberbut really, if you have any suggestions of a fiberglass blank for a redfish rod throw them up.
How hard would it be to strip down a old rod and update the hardware, possibly down to the grib and reel seat?

Cameron MortensonMemberWhen I first started this glass obsession I was all about the seven foot five weights, but lately I’ve been on the pond and enjoyed a eight foot seven weight so much that I am hunting those down on ebay.
I won this rod last night. I am hoping to get some use out of this rod on the pond quite soon.

If you asked for a list of good blanks for salt and big water I am sure that you get some great answers.

Cameron MortensonMemberYeah…it is a bit gaudy…but I thought that it would look neat in photographs.

MemberOhh man that is a sweet rod Cameron. What is the value of a rod like that?

Cameron MortensonMemberMike A…I don’t know…I only paid $57 for it with shipping off ebay.
The ebay market is weird…I picked up a Heddon five weight for $60 or so a couple of weeks ago…and the same rod just sold yesterday for $102.

The Itinerant AnglerI was flipping through an old copy of Field and Stream in the can the other day and I caught an article from mid-2004 on the surge in prices of old fishing tackle eBay has caused.
