There is nothing undignified by refinishing and fishing old bamboo. My fishing partner, an old trout bum who has a custom Walt Carpenter cane rod, calls them “educated” rods and just loves my early 1930’s Heddon.
I, personally, am in love with old Heddon cane and my “cheapo” #10 9-6wt is one of the nicest casting rods I’ve ever laid hands on. I paid $100 (much more than it was worth in the condition it was in), bought $40 worth of supplies and spent about 40 hours over a couple of months to strip, refinish and put new guides on the rod.
