I stopped by CR Outfitters in Norris, TN yesterday. I’ve been on a hat-buying binge the past couple months, as I’m afraid that my favorite fishing hat is starting to show wear. Have to rotate a bit and get a couple more ready to take its place.
I’ve never bought much other than leaders, tippet, flies, and tying stuff at CR. I’m not a huge Winston or T&T fan, and I typically don’t spend Abel or Bauer money on reels. That kind of limits their selection for me. However, I noticed the owner’s hat, and saw that they had a couple more in stock. The color I’m going to describe as similar to Fender’s Fiesta Red they used to paint on guitars. For the non-guitards among us, it’s tomato soup red. Here’s the front:

And here in all of it’s “UP YOURS YOU CORN DUNKING REDNECK!” glory, is the back. Guaranteed to get you into a confrontation with any of a few dozen lawn chair anglers scattered along the Clinch, seeing the river as their private seafood market:

For those not in the area, the Clinch is the subject of a whole ton of debate and hard feelings right now. TWRA has put slot limits on the upper portions for the first time. There’s a long, long history of folks taking a lot of trout out of the waters, well over the limits. The Clinch has also got an amazing midge population, and grows some enormous trout. Whether or not there is natural reproduction is up for debate, but what isn’t debatable is the large fish that the river can produce.
The argument has largely pitted fly anglers against gear fishermen with corn, salmon eggs, and GULP! Highly effective, and according to the fly anglers highly devastating to the fishery.
I don’t think that this will be the new favorite, but it’s rare to see a fly-related item be that blatantly argumentative. I had to have it.
