Backups

Just curious what are you guys using for a backup. Last night I finally found exactly what I had been looking for at wally world. It’s a Seagate GoFlex Home 1 TB nas for under $200. Right now my lightroom catalogs are all on an external and with this new nas and time machine I can back up the external drive and my Mac.

I was impressed at how intuitive and easy everything was to set up. I’m still playing with time machine but from what I can tell it’s pretty simple. Pick something to back up, pick a date and restore. Apple sure does makes things easy.

I’d be very, very cautious about depending on that device as your sole source for backups.

Should have mentioned in my first post, on your backup drives (other than the NAS), keep them offline when not actively being used for backups.

So how reliable is Time Machine? One of our network admins at work recently converted to Mac at home and he was extremely impressed with TM. This is a guy who is responsible for maintaining and backing up massive amounts of production, EPA, and regulatory, data for three major automotive manufacturing facilities. Judging from his enthusiasm I assumed it must be pretty solid.

I have no practical experience with TimeMachine, though most of the folks I know who use Apple products love it.
