I noticed on Tibor’s site that they offered greater capacities with braided backing than micron backing of the same # class. It really has made me start thinking why fly anglers do not use conventional braided line as backing.

Example; new tibor signature 7/8 reel will hold 200yds of micron 20# or 225 yds of braided 20#.

To me that would be a no brainer but there must be something better about traditional backing to keep fly anglers from using it vs. power pro

The diameter is smaller per class and the capacity is greater, plus its what is on most captains’ spinning gear.

Is there a benefit that I am not aware of with micron or dacron vs. braid?

Price….dacron backing is cheap in comparison to any of the braided lines.

25 yards on top of 200 yards of backing is pretty insignificant.

25 yards on top of 200 yards of backing is pretty insignificant.  How often have you had a fish pull that far?  I’d fire up the motor and start chasing the thing before it got to the point where 25 yards of backing would make or break the situation.

yeah, you’re right. If a fish gets out to a certain point and you are stationary, 25 yds will probably not save you.

But from a technical standpoint, are there any differences between the two or is it just fly angler marketing vs conventional tackle marketing.

I did a bit of research and I was reminded that braided line can spin on a spool under heavy loads, will Dacron do that as well?

Other than cost I think the only advantages traditional dacron braid like Micron is that it has less tendency to dig in under the beneath layers when pulled on hard, that it is less likely to cut your fingers and holds knots better.

I plan on living forever, so far so good.

I use conventional braided line (50 lb powerpro) for backing right now on my 6 and 8 wt reels.  The primary reason being that I live an hour from the nearest shop and just wanted something to throw on there.  It’s much more expensive.  My main concern is that the braid will eat the guides.  I’ve fished all though carp and striper striper seasons and have been into the backing some but haven’t ever been way into it.  I don’t notice any damage to my guides yet.  Couple problems I do notice: Once it gets wet the powerpro bleeds that camo color onto the fly line a little.  Also, if you absently rest your finger on it while a fish is pulling, it will slice you like a razor.  That is somewhat true of any backing, but 50lb braid is a saw.

My overall impression is that the diameter is just too small to be ideal.  I think it’s justified maybe for false albacore fishing or such where you actually want to have 300+ yards of backing.

When my buddy Jeff and I fished the Kvichak River in Alaska last year for big trout and salmon, Terry and Wendy Gunn suggested switch rods, Scientific Angler Mastery Series Expert Distance Taper lines (105 ft vs the usual 90ft), paired with 30 lb Spiderwire as backing, which takes up less space than dacron.

I use the 300 yard spools of 50 pound Fireline braid on all my big reels. I pay about $25 per spool. You can get it in white too. Great stuff.
