Mark SchaferMemberLooks like we will be making the trip to south Florida again in a few weeks ,and that means going thru Atlanta. I have never used the multi passenger lane and was wondering if that’s a better way to go or just stay on regular 75 where I know my way around.

The Itinerant AnglerMark –
If you’re headed down I-75 to go to Florida, yes, the best way to go through the city is to stay in the HOV lane on the far left side of the road.

Mark SchaferMemberThanks Zach,
Let me get it straight in my mind if I just get in the HOV lane I don’t have to do anything else it eventually meets up with 75 south again. The point where 75 splits right and the HOV stays straight that is the 75/85 junction.Jun 8, 2011 at 9:04 pm #48948brian dunigan
MemberEvery time my wife drives through Atlanta, she gets on her cell phone somewhere in the middle of downtown, gets distracted, and goes the wrong way at that I-75/I-85 interchange.
I swear she likes driving from Florida to Nashville by way of Duluth, GA, which adds a couple hours to the drive.

Steve K.MemberMark,
When going through ATL….timing is everything. Coming south on 75….go through the City before 0630 or after 0930 in the morning. If you’re traversing in the evening…..get there before 1500 or after 1930. Of course all times are guesses based on years of experience….and all it takes is one fender bender and all bets are off.
Good luck.

MemberJust be careful with your timing, tryjng not to go through bt 7:30 and 9:30 or 4:00 and 6:00, and that will be a major help. Other than that, just stay on i75 and follow your road signs. You’ll be fine. This woman driver drives it regularly and has never had any trouble.

Mark SchaferMemberThanks for all the advice gang, my plan is to leave Ohio at 3:00 am that puts me in Atlanta about 1:00 pm if all goes well. The only sticky thing this year will be that it’s the Friday of the long 4th of July weekend

But are you talking on your cell phone?

MSFriday traffic starts lunch and holiday weekend Fridays are usually much worse as everyone is trying to get out of town. I would be prepared to sit for 1 hour + as you pass through. Also be careful where you stop on the south side of town, mainly between I-20 and the 75/85 split

The Itinerant AnglerFlying into Atlanta Monday. From the airport going to Duluth, am I better going Hwy 285 or through downtown on Hwy 85?

If you land before say, 330-4pm, I would go 85. Saves several miles. Atlanta traffic is typically mild on Mondays, especially in the summer. I work off of Sugarloaf Pkwy in Duluth and make most of that drive daily.
