I’d just be curious to know what the game is out there. SE Kansas is only about 4 hours from my parents’ home. If a guy wanted to hunt pheasants with his own dog, what’s the story on getting access? Where would you start?

If you go to parts of South Dakota ditch(roadside) hunting is legal and can be very productive. Even the public access places this time of year won’t be crowded, and sense you can’t start till 10:00 it gives you some time to visit the local coffee shop and ask around.
I haven’t checked the weather but it will brutal up north and the wind will make you think twice about getting out of the truck.
My labs did fine but some fancy pointing dogs have a tough time in the thick stuff,
Check her pads a lot and watch out for the skunks.

That’s cool Mark. LOOOONG haul for me. Is there such a thing as legit wild pheasant hunting (like we used to have for quail and like they still have on private farms) or is it all beating fields in a line?

Where we go its wild birds get some long spurs, big chunks of ground are tough alone, you might look for fence lines, wind blocks and sloughs
If you have never had your dog in wide open country it can be tough to keep them in gun range my dogs quarter well so it helps.
I use a SxS ic and mod with 5’s or steel 4’s some areas require steel so be sure to check.

I was born in Nebraska and that’s where both lines of my family landed when they got off the boat. But, sadly, I just don’t see it as a pheasant destination anymore. South Dakota is pheasant mecca, or at least it was when I went through there several years back. My pheasant-hunting uncle from Lincoln goes to S. Dakota, which probably says a lot.
