I have been introduced to braid for bass fishing with conventional gear and I love it, BUt is anyone using any form of it for trout fishing with fly tackle?

Its not going to work as a leader because its not stiff enough.

I won’t use braid for anything except backing and halibut fishing (in 100-200 feet of water) I hate braid hate it hate it hate it. It makes for line cuts, lost fish (lost a 60+ pound king due to braid once, clients lost lots of fish because they insisted on using braid).

Man what kinda braid were you using,

Firewire, tough line, whatever, it doesn’t stretch at all which is its worse part, if a fish turns toward you you have like 4 feet of play before the hook pops out whereas with mono you have much more elesticity.

I never thought of the fact that is is not stiff enough, but your right it would not be stiff enough.

    Hmmm…

Instead of the conventional tapered mono leader, I did some experimenting today, and put 10′ lengths of these on the end of my fly line:

billy, orvis sells a tapered braided leader, not sure how close it is to the braid you’re using.

I played around with the Orvis braided leaders for a little and was troubled by their tendency to throw spray over the water during presentations unless I was conscientious about false casting the water out of the braid – which isn’t really practical when the fish is close. A furled leader is also another option in this category.

Somewhere (I think it might have been DB’s board) I read a thread where someone was looking at the possibility of using the new translucent GsP braids as tippet. I don’t know if it ever got out of the discussion realm and into actual use.

    Here’s what I’m talking about: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/pod/horizontal-pod.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/pod-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20166-cat600395_TGP&rid=&indexId=cat600395&navAction=push&masterpathid=&navCount=1&parentType=index&parentId=cat600395&id=0041307

the “super braids” Billy is talking about are a lot different from catfish trotlines, and braided/furled tapered leaders.
