Question for you older fishing dudes. I just got a new eyeglasses prescription, and I’ve joined the bifocals crowd. (Oy.) Those of you who are there already, what have you found works best for polarized fishing lenses: Bifocals, progressives, or do you just go single RX and take them off to tie on a fly? I’m getting some Costa 580s and don’t know which setup to choose.

Only thing I know about bifocals is Chet Atkins’ old joke about how he went to the bathroom just after getting bifocals for the first time, and while he was admiring the big one, the little one peed on his shoes.

I have Smith straight lines mounted in regular wire frames, they set the closeup lens low so it does interfere as much and I’ve been very happy with them. I also have a pair of single vision wrap arounds, which, although they are great while actually fishing, are a giant PITA when you need to change a fly and have to get your readers over or under and keep your hat from falling off and then the readers slip down etc., I’m totally done with that stuff, and I see no advantage to progressives for our purposes.
Wading with bifocals is a challenge, and it isn’t cured completely by head angle, age has something to with it also.
    Good luck,

    Phil –

I’ve been fishing Guideline Polarized (glpolarized.com) for several years and have been very happy with them.

I wear progressives for both my regular glasses and my sunglasses.

I also wear progressives for everyday and in sunglasses.

Thanks to all for the advice. Frankly, I punted: I went with the single Rx Costa Pescador in mirror-gray with 580 glass. I’ll have to take them off to tie knots, but I think it’ll be safer for wading and there’s a smaller chance that I’ll have problems. (Truth be told, I’m one of those guys who rarely changes flies.) I may try the stick-on technique if I need it.
