    Hi Guys

I am thining of coming to the States (from Australia) for the FFF Conclave in West Yellowstone at the end of August. I was thinking about going to Alaska to fish either prior to or after the Conclave (not certain when yet.)

However, as you will appreciate there are so many lodges to choose from when you look on the net, so I was after some advice. I understand how time critical the fishing is over there, in terms of species you want to target. So I should mention that I really wanted to focus on largish rainbows.

I have used the guys at Yellowdog Fly fishing Adventures for a trip last year (they were great) and will contact them again about recommendations (but even they have more than 10 lodges on their site to choose from)! It makes it hard 🙂

So I was hoping that someone could recommend a lodge for me. I was looking to go middle of the range – say $4500 to $5500 for a week – but would be willing to pay more if its worth it.

    Thanks very much in anticipation.

First, end of Aug early Sept is the ABSOLUTE best time for large rainbows in Alaska. Many of us who live here live for Sept.

Unless someone gives you a personal recommendation from a Bristol Bay lodge they have used, I think I’d look at the website of a well known fly shop or several fly shops that books Alaskan lodge trips (like The Fly Shop) and see who they use.

Talk I’ve heard says that the recession has hurt some of the Bristol Bay lodges and some didn’t even open this year.

I thought that you were not coming to the conclave this year. Are you still interested in that float trip

    Simon,
An outfit that I used to work for – International Angler – hosts trips every year to Alaska and they have been doing so for twenty years.

Thanks Guys for the input. Plenty of options for me to look at – still a little undecided but have plenty of things to think about.
