MemberMy brother serves our country, strapped into a comet that spits death and shows up unannounced, he is a real American hero. Based out of Anchorage, Captain Eric Otto is a flight lead of a three man airship of F-22s.
My brother’s plane.Being in the Air force and 3000 miles apart, my brother and I, don’t get to spend much time together. The summer before last, he got seven days off in a row, and invited my dad and I up to spend a couple days fishing, seeing the sites, and just being family again.
The Glacier twenty minutes by car and 30 by boat from his house. His front steps yields scenery hard to imagine.

Photo taken from my brothers porch.
Moose Joining us for breakfast the first morning in Elk River Ak.We fished three rivers in three days; the Russian, the Kenai, and Quartz Creek. Our base camp was a couple hours North of Anchorage, a fisherman’s town called Cooper Landing. Living here is hard, and the folks show it. Kind in greeting, but tough in skin a visitor doesn’t have to stretch the imagination to see how harsh living in this arctic-ocean-side town must be. Tourism and commercial fishing are the heartbeat of most shore side cities in the Region, and once outside Anchorage, it helps to speak angler.

The sleepy town of Cooper Landing. The Rainbows of the Kenai can get huge. Small fish run three pounds, and you have the added bonus of landing a char.
A small Kenai Bow.
My dad’s first Salmon, and his last. After we fished teh Kenai, day two lead us to Quartz Creek. We caught more Dolly Varden than I can count to this day. These white-fin-tipped char lined up behind the spawning Sockeye eating any egg pattern you drifted in front of them.

A pair of Buck Sockeye on Quartz Creek.Last day of our trip took my brother and I to the Russian River. Rainbow paradise. Eric and I spent the day walking the river, talking, and fishing. In that order we enjoyed our day being brothers of twenty years earlier. Back when I could give him wedgies and advice on girls. Now all grown up, and knowing the ‘Need for Speed’, we have few moments so retro.

Only picture I took that day on the Russian with Eric.An eight, six & maybe a five weight are all you need to fish AK (Sans Kings running). Egg patterns and Big-Hooked Streamer patterns for the Bows and Sockeye, with 30 pound leaders. Travel June through August and you will have tolerable weather.
I ate and stayed with family, so sorry no cheap hotel notes or secret greasy spoon tips.
Alaska, it’s where you go when you die.
