MemberWe set out to fish a small stream this weekend, known to have an original native strain of Apache trout located somewhere in the White Mountains of Arizona. My intentions were to hook Hudson, my son, into this rare trout only catchable in Arizona. The following is what we found;

After an hour or so, the grass proved to be too tall for H, and at a little less than three feet he got frustrated quickly. We decided to move to new water, more accessible for a little guy. On the way we ran into rain. Hudson spotted this rainbow and asked to pull over so he could watch it.

While my son and wife, Tara, watched the sky I turned around and saw this.

After a couple mintues we were headed back onto the road, still in search of a 2 year old-catchable Apache.
Upon arrival our secret Apacha Lake was dead calm. The only noticeable disruption of the lake’s surface, was tiny dimples of rising fish.

A little observation and we figured out the bug.

Two casts later, we had hooked a fine specimen
As two year-olds do, Hudson had lost interest by this time and decided he didn’t want to fish anymore. So Dad and Mom took the honors of landing and photographing this rare trout.

He didn’t land this Apache, but until he decides he’s not interested in fishing with me anymore I will keep taking him on trips.

Until next week, when I will see if a tiny meadow stream (with short grass) can hold his active little mind and body long enough to cast, catch, and release his first Brook trout.

Simon ChuMemberGreat pics again Aaron
Awesome.
I also love the picture of the young fella having fun.

MemberThanks JamesW for the compliment.
Simon – isn’t that the truth- treasure every moment with your little ones. I kid you not, the first thing I whispered into my son’s ear, immediatly after he was born was, “we will fish.”

The Itinerant AnglerThat particular misunderstanding happens quite a lot Aaron – I have heard people say that for years without thinking about it.

The Itinerant AnglerBTW For some reason I was thinking Apache trout were all little stream-resident dinks.

MemberZ – Your thoughts on these fish inhabiting mostly streams is correct. There are a few choice lakes that have them too.

Funny….the first thing I told mine was, “Bye. I’ll see you at the end of the summer.”

MemberI really enjoyed your pictures Aaron. Definitely changing my mind about what I think of when I think of Arizona! Looks like you have a beautiful piece of cool mounatins and trout to escape to during the summer. I am jealous. 🙂
Thanks John, let me know if you ever make it down this way. Happy to show you some of the Arizona treasures.

MemberI had a writer send me a piece today on Christmas Tree lake, an Apache Trout hot spot. His work was beatuiful, reminded me of how special our state is. The title of his piece was “Angling at the Juncture of the Sun and the Moon.”
Most people don’t even know the names of the two creeks(Sun & Moon) that flow into and out of Christmas tree, heck most people for that matter think Apaches are Cutts. It just struck me as a magnificent way to title an article about an extrodanary place. I can say, after reading his work, I wish I had half his wit and skill with a pen and pad. Reminded me of how special a craft it is to be able to put your thoughts into words, and how far I have yet to go.
