Well, to say the least, fishing has been red hot here in SW Montana. Being home for over close to 3 weeks straight between jobs at the end of July is rare and this year I am lucky. Last year at this time, the rivers were still high and dirty. This year, everything cleared remarkably early, yet with good flows. The East Gallatin, the Yellowstone and the Gardner have all produced exceptionally well with streamers and dries.
I maintain a fishing log for the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks every year, and the numbers for this July have been amazing. Since July 1, 44 hours of fishing on 3 rivers, 151 rainbows, 110 Browns, 10 cutthroat, 5 cutt-bows and only 6 whitefish. 23 of the rainbows and browns were 18”+. I should take more photos, but as I fish alone, it cuts into the catching time.

19” Brown on 7.5” Orvis Fullflex, East Gallatin (#10 Olive Woolly Bugger)

East Gallatin Oxbow pool-the bank broke through (4 feet wide) a couple of years ago and created this fantastic deep pool. Always lots of fish here. For those of you who have flown into Bozeman, it is very likely you have made an approach turn immediately overhead of this spot.

Well, it’s only a few days more until August begins. Should get on the water a couple of more times before next week. What a July in SW Montana. Lets hope August produces just as well.
