Hi guys.  While this is, reasonably enough, a US-centric board, I thought there might be some passing interest in this short account, with pics, of my day on the River Nera in Umbria, in central Italy, last week.

I’ve always wanted to fish some of the streams in Europe, but the Europeans make is so difficult, its not worth the effort.  Still, there is so much else to do, it doesn’t really matter.

    No kidding!

Very cool, Jolyon.  Any idea why those waters look so pale, almost whitish?

    Zach

Limestone/karst topography makes the water ‘chalky’ and gives it that glow.

    Yep.

Zach–Mike has answered your question (“it’s the karst”) in a way I wouldn’t have been able to, having forgotten my elementary geology/geography.

The guy I was with, Niccolo, mentioned that there is a lot of undeveloped trout-fishing potential in Italy, in particular an area in Lazio, north of Rome, that is known as “the Land of the 10,000 spring creeks”.

10,000 creeks like the one pictured above? How difficult is it for a Yank to get a lifetime visa, with no intention of working? Maybe DA could meet us in the middle and we could have some photog. workshops.

Nice story.  Umbria is such a beautiful place.  We had a wonderful time there a couple of years ago (that is, when we were not driving around lost).

Bob–you’re right about the getting lost.  The Italians have a great trick of having signs that lead you along and then disappear at the critical moment.  I usually end up relying on the position of the sun and dead reckoning.  Two years ago, I kept on ending up on the road to a town called Bastardo, which somehow seemed particularly fitting.

What is more amusing is when you come to a split in the road and there are two seperate signs for the same town pointing in either direction.

    That is beautiful.
