Do any of you guys use a smaller size full sink line for your bigger rods?  I am thinking about a 6wt full sink line with a 6 wt. rod and using that same line/spool  for an 8wt. rod also.  Whatcha think?

I wouldn’t. I believe a 6-weight rod is designed for 6-weight line. A full sinking line, I believe, weighs the same as a floating line. It just has thinner diameter.

Having said that, many anglers believe you cast a sinking line differently than you cast a floating line. I’ve never found that to be true. I use the same technique for both, except that with a sinking line I don’t let my false cast unroll as much.

    That’s just my two cents.

Juan , I would say it depends on the rod. I think if it is a soft 8 , you might be ok, but I doubt you will get the feel that you are looking for. A full sinking line does cast a lot more like a floating line than say a sink tip.

You can use the 6 wt line on the 8 wt rod but it will take about 45 ft of 6 wt line to load the rod. Now if you are fishing a long way off this would be ok but if you are fishing close the rod will not load.

    Thanks guys.
What I am looking at is having a 6 wt. sinking line that I would use on a normal basis with a 6wt rod.  I would then have the option of using it on my 8wt rod without having to buy a new reel/spool or line for the 8 wt sinking line.  I do not know how much I would use it so I don’t really want to invest in a new reel.  The reel I am looking at is a Nautilus FW7 and use it as a full time 6 wt reel, but purchase a FW 7 PLUS spool for my 8wt floating line using the same reel.  Clear as mudd?  Thanks.

One possibility could be to use a shooting head system, I’m not sure if that would be suitable for the type of fishing you are trying to do.
