MemberPicked up a new 7D yesterday. I can’t believe how far these things (cameras) have come since I bought my 5D – far out. The advances in the controls and settings are just mind boggling and the increase in “user friendliness” is commensurate with that. Now to see if its takes good pics too………..
What do I particularly like.
A choice of 3 RAW settings.
The one button that immediately brings up all the major settings on the screen, and these can then be changed there rather than trying to look at that little screen on top to work out where your settings are at the moment or having to go into the menu – I LOVE THIS FUNCTION!!!!
How about a horizon level in the viewfinder and in the live view mode – faaaaaarkennel!!!!!
And it shoots movies………
I bought this camera specifically for jump shots and for capturing action sequences, at 8fps and with the new focusing system I like it very much, its light too.
I hope we are going to become very good friends……..
Just have to get used to crop frame shooting…

Sorry to step in early, but I’ve seen results like that from the first tests of the DsIII.
In the test shots on that review it looks like the sensor has gone beyond what the lens will resolve.
The 45TSE from my own short test was not as sharp as the TSE90 and never made it into my lens line-up when tested on my cameras. The 7D is very high resolution for the size of it’s sensor, more than anything else around at the moment and is going to push lenses to their absolute limit while a 12MP camera wont.
It’s also going to exaggerate any problems like camera shake and poor focusing in a big way.www.dsaphoto.com

David AndersonMemberNot sure about the color thing, it might be early days for the firmwear or a problem in processing rather than the sensor itself.
They mention auto white balance and IMHO that never gets it right – not even close.

I apologize Morsie; I was not trying to steal any thunder or devalue your recent purchase as I am very interested in getting a 7D myself. I was simply curious to know if you, and DA, had seen the review I posted and what your thoughts were. I look forward to hearing, and seeing, how the new body worked.
David–Thanks for the comments. They made a lot of sense.

David AndersonMemberToday was the first time I’ve seen one and I was very impressed in general.
The menu layout is brilliant and the view finder, for a crop frame, is awesome.
Also, the horizon grid is a great idea for quick wide shots.I hope all this stuff is on the 1DsIV !
Dusty, I read everything I can get on new cameras and am always interested in opinions and more than willing to take problems on board, but I also tend to concentrate more on the reviewers like Luminous-landscape and DPReview because they know what their on about and seem to have good testing methods.
Thanks for posting the link.. 😎The Tests I did with Morsie showed his 70-200 F4L and 100 Macro produced excellent raws at 800 & 1600 ISO while we were calibrating the lenses.
I know there was an early firmwear upgrade with the 7D for ghosting from frame to frame and it wouldn’t surprise me to see a chance in color as well, but I SERIOUSLY doubt Canon would release them if they weren’t sharp because of the sensor.
Anyway, I will be asking about them at Canon , because I want one now myself ! 😉

John BennettMemberBah these things can drive me nuts 🙂
Is the 7Ds focusing/AF/IQ the best out there? No, but those that are better cost quite a bit more. Theres *nothing* wrong with it
Would anyone be unhappy with this image?
Courtesy of a friend who has been using the 7D for awhile

If yes, buy a Pro body
if no, I’m guessing you’ll be tickled pink by the 7DNov 18, 2009 at 2:53 pm #69441john michael white
MemberDavid,
How do you calibrate lenses?
Nov 18, 2009 at 3:18 pm #69442
John BennettMemberJohn its a feature on all new Canon bodies since the 50D about 18 months ago.
Bodies and lenses are “built to spec” and each have a tolerance variance. For the most part it’s not a huge issue but people might find their body or a new lens purchase was front/back focusing a bit and sending them in to Canon to be Calibrated.
Say for example the tolerance +/-5 on a scale with 0 being perfect. You might have a body thats +3 and when paired with a lens that was -1. You’d never notice. But what if that same lens off the shelf was -2??. The variance from back/front focus is 5 widgetts or millimeters or whatever standard of measurement Canon uses. Either way, they would calibrate both.
Now what if you’ve had a lens for years that was +4 and when mounted on your body that also back focused a hair (+3) they are fine. Yes theyback focus a hair but again its a minute amount.
So you send your new lens thats -1 and body (thats =3) into Canon for calibration and they come back perfect…both at -1 (within spec) Does your old favorite lens now need to be calibrated as well?????
So on all new bodies Canon has a feature called “micro focus adjustment”. Its an adjustment you make to your body and its stored in memory for each of your lenses.
Thus your body is calibrated to each of your lenses and when you mount a different lens, the setting is recalled. You can calibrate your body to 20 lenses. Keep in mind the adjustments are minute.
