The Itinerant AnglerHey guys –
Just got back from a trip with a couple close friends from high school to the Erie tributaries of Ohio.

InactiveNice to hear you made the trip up there. I have been making the trek out to Ohio for spring steelhead for about 10 years now and I can honestly say that it really is a locals only event. (which honestly has me questioning the future of my visits there) It can be very hit or miss and you have to pick your days carefully.

MemberSo now do you see it isn’t all the glam it is portrayed in the magazines?

MemberI just moved to Ohio from the east coast (CT), and I’ve only fished for Lake Erie steelhead twice.

The Itinerant AnglerIn fairness, Tim, I’m not sure the magazines have Ohio in mind when they’re doing those glamorous articles. 🙂

MemberNext time you get to OH, Zach, get a hold of me. Maybe head a little further west and I’ll take you to the V. It’s not as popular as the Grand/Chagrin, but there are very nice fish and few people.

MemberI’ve had this debate with my friends too. Â “Steelhead” is a non-scientific descriptive term based on how they look. Â These were football shaped and bright chrome. Â They are all Onchorhynchus mykiss,
Definitely all O. mykiss.

Mark SchaferMemberI guess we don’t really need Patrick after all. It may have been to long ago for many to remember.

I obviously don’t know the Patrick reference, but I guess my post came across the wrong way.

MemberIn Erie, it is a steelhead if it is caught on the swing, if it is caught any other way it is a rainbow ;).

MemberAndrew  –  No reason to apologize, I sincerely appreciate the thoughtfulness of your reply.  I was a part of a somewhat heated debate a decade ago on this exact issue and arrived at your same conclusion. Â
I think sometimes it’s hard for serious steelheader’s west coast and otherwise to deal with some of the nuances of the GL fishery… Â you know like catching a dozen fish in a few hours effort. Â However some other dudes seem to really appreciate it, you can swing fly’s with the two hander, have a shot at a 10+ pound fish and fish some “big” water. Â It’s awesome IMO. Â Â
Thanks for your thoughts,

Jim LamprosMemberThe fishing, scenery and generally everything about Ohio is lousy; y’all should head somewhere else next time.
