    We received an email at the shop today stating that Winston will now reach out and put their rods in Cabela’s across the nation. Why the hell would they do such a thing?

    If companies continue to do this, say good bye to your local fly shop. It only hurts us.

    Cabela’s pricing won’t be any lower, but I just can’t fault Winston for doing everything it can to stay in business.

    Seriously, times are tough.

    The price on the sticker may be the same but everyone with a pulse gets coupons from Cabela’s pretty much the same thing as selling at a discount.

    Well, discount the line yourself by 10%, and if they cut you off, sue their ass for anti-competitive practices.

    Along the same lines…how much longer can some of the smaller fish survive?

    Those smaller fish as you put it are probably the most profitable companies in fly fishing right now.

    Most of the larger companies have a section in there application about adhering to MSRP or MAMP although they give a lot of leeway for sales and promotions. Rods and reels are the big shiny things that bring people in to look, but the money tied up in the inventory does not make for a

    Also, since Winston is raising the prices of the top-of-the-line rods by about $80. each, I do not think adding Cabelas as a retailer is a move of desperation. Prices I saw for the B2 series were $765 or so.

    The manager of a very successful long running flyshop relayed to me that a flyshop needs 3 things to be profitable:

    If you buy a Winston from Cabelas it will cost you $19.95 for shipping.  That will eat up any $15 or $20 coupons.

    I’ve got to respectfully play devil’s advocate here:

    My Local Flyshop:
    Winston LT5 4 weight = $695
    7% sales tax = $48.65
    Total = $743.65

    Cabelas:
    Winston LT5 4 weight = $695
    S&H = $19.95
    Total = $714.95

    Savings through Cabelas = $28.70*

    Of course the intangibles must be factored in such as being able to lawn cast a prototype at the shop….face-to-face advice, etc. Also add in the cost of time and gas to drive downtown to said flyshop. Now don’t get me wrong…I try to patronize the local establishment as much as anybody but that is a somewhat significant savings.

    Just sayin’.

    With all due respect to Drifter, most guys will ask “is this best you can do on this rod” My answer would be something like I can take say $50 off the rod, give you your choice of a fly line for it or give you $100 off a reel.
