    Hey guys –

Jim Bartschi, President and chief rod designer at Scott Fly Rods, was kind enough to come on the podcast to comment on and answer some of the questions raised in my thread, “Rod Pricing Psychology.” That thread will remain locked, but you can continue the discussion here with the benefit of Jim’s comments.

Why are Fly Rods Getting More Expensive?

    Jim,
In response to the question of warranty I would much prefer paying for a broken rod myself each time I break it.

I don’t think taking out the warranty will result in lower priced rods. No manufacturer will say, okay you can buy my rod without warranty for say a 100 bucks less. The price will just be the same.

What i do think is that a good warranty is expensive. For instance i own a scierra hm2 and broke the tip 2 months ago, they claim to give lifetime warranty but parts for the hm2 are just not available anymore. A company like Sage wich is a real price step higher does have parts for rods from way back. Sage does charge 35 euro a part in Europe but you will have one.
