My family is thinking of a vacation this year in a southern direction down to blue ridge mountains.

    Eric –

I would look into the Wear’s Valley area.

I’ll second Wears Valley.  My extended family gets a cabin/chalet in that area every other year for Christmas and my favorites are always the ones in Wears Valley.  You can take the back way into the park and be on Little River at Metcalf Bottoms in 5 minutes.  The Townsend area is nice also and a little farther from the craziness known as Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg.  This link (http://troutfest.org/PAGES/Where.htm) has most if not all of the places to stay in Blount County (Townsend, Walland, Maryville).  Bearly Rustic Cabins is a good one in the Townsend area…

If you make it down, give me a holler when it gets closer and I can point you in the right direction for fishing…

What David and Zach said. I was going to mention the gravel road from Wears Valley to Metcalf. Nice drive.

You could also access Cades Cove/Abrams Creek for wildlife viewing and fishing. And if you feel the need….close enough for a foray over the gap to the land of rubber tomahawks.

Another consideration would be to swing around to the North Carolina side and stay in the Bryson City area. Lots of close fishing and some nice small towns in that area to visit (Sylva, etc.)

    My 2 cents,
    -Pete
