    Simon,

    Did you mean a Z-axis?

    #22430

I have used that line on a 6wt S4, it worked fine quite nice

It was essentially designed for the ZAxis rods. I’ve been playing with one for a while now and I think its a really beautiful fishing line. Its not a distance casting machine, just a great fishing line (a bit like the Zed really). Look forward to actually fishing with one in the next few weeks now that the trout season’s opened. We also tried it on Dave Anderson’s 11′ 6 weight switch Zed and it was just great as well, really sweet and easy.

You guys say Zee we say Zed.

The Rio Gold most impressed me on the 10′ #5 Zed where it really sings, it’s good up close & personal or at full line – a very good match…

It’s also a great allrounder on the TCR 6 ..

I bought a Rio Gold line Saturday afternoon. I put it on my Orvis Silver Label Tip Flex rod. I bought this rod in 2001 as my first nice fly rod when I started fly fishing. I have always has some trouble casting that rod. I always attributed it to it being my “fastest” rod in the stable. I was looking for a slightly longer belly line like the Orvis Long Belly Trout line that I had on it.

I fished it all day on the Norfork River yesterday. For this rod, it really made a difference. I really like this line on this rod. It really made this rod fun to fish again. it loads the rod really nice. It may be making up some how for my lack of casting skill, but I really like this line on this rod.

Another feature I found interesting, it’s a two color line. The head is light-olive and the running line is yellow. I makes it very easy to see where the head transitions into the running line. I was able to see where this change was.

    Not regrets buying it.

The theory on the Gold is that it has a lot of weight-front loaded for short casting, but it also has an extended head and “loop stabilization tapering” (what that exactly entails I do not know).

    Hey Zach,

(sorta off topic… but not by much)

Just wondering if you would consider doing a podcast with some of the names in fly line design/manufacturing?

    Hey Zach,

(sorta off topic… but not by much)

Just wondering if you would consider doing a podcast with some of the names in fly line design/manufacturing?  Once upon a time you bought a weight-forward or double taper in the right line weight and went fishing.  I’m pretty amazed (read ‘super confused’) at the diversity and specialization that has occurred with fly lines in recent years.  Not to mention it’s often hard to try a line on your rod before buying it.

Maybe an interview with Jim Vincent or Lefty or Jim Teeny or any of the other names attached to line manufacturers regarding the theories and development.

As a side note… I always wondered why line companies (or rod companies for that matter) never ‘recommend’ a certain line for a particular rod.  Though… I do believe Rio does this for Spey line/rod combinations.

I, for one, would be extremely interested.

    Ryan

    I second that request/suggestion.

Isn’t this line (like many lines for ‘fast rods’) a bit heavy for their line weight?
    So a 5 weight line is actually a 5.5?

My guess is that the Sharkskin line from SA is pretty much the same.

Anyone cast them side by side and comment on the differences & similarities?

According to the Rio specs its not a half line heavy but is at the top end of the allowable range – ie

The allowable range for a 4 weight is 114

I’ve had it for over a month now. I use it on an SLT 5wt. It casts great, roll casts great, seems a bit heavy, and floatation could be ALOT better. The sinking is problem and I end up having to treat the line just about every trip. I won’t be buying it again.

Mike did you cut the front loop off? Its not something I’ve had a problem with at all.

I haven’t done anything but use it Morsie. During a trip I’ll end up running it through my T-shirt a few times to clean it and if that doesn’t do it, and often it won’t, I’ll rub it down in Gink outa desperation. That usually remedies the problem short term.
I’m anal about my drift and any sink in my line aggravates the hell outa me. I think the extra weight might be the reason for the sink. I’m gonna try really cleaning the line and treating it with some Zipcast. If after that I notice it sinking more then my other lines I’ll part with it.
