Cameron MortensonMemberWe are just back from a trip to Michigan to see the family. The wife and I were able to steal away to Roscommon and do a day canoe float on the South Branch of the AuSable River through the Mason Tract. This is beautiful and seemingly untouched country. We even passed a seeminly unconcerned bobcat (not a cougar) that was walking along the river. The Mason Tract is a fourteen mile stretch of water without cabins or other development. It is the best $38 we’ve spent in quite some time.
Here are a few photographs from the day. I learned to fly fish on these waters…so it is always nice to come back to my “roots”.

Scott “F” seven foot three weight paired with the ol’ Young funky green reel. Perfect for casting those little dry flies in this sweet tea colored water.
The wife put this streamside lunch together. The can of bubbly was a nice touch.
This scrappy brown that came out of the water to take the dry fly and he posed nicely for a few underwater photographs.
The first trout I ever caught was a brown about this size just up the road a bit on the AuSable at Burton’s Landing…so this was a perfect way to end the day.Jul 2, 2007 at 1:10 pm #21130Zach Matthews

David AndersonMemberHi Cameron,
Nice shots !
I have that same rod – it’s such a joy to fish with and is one of my favorite light rods.

Cameron MortensonMemberAt $6 for a little can of the Sofia…it is not something that you might do often…but it is a nice treat.
Yes Zach…it is a little green J. W. Young Condex.

MemberEric,
I am pretty sure the Troutsman closed when Kelly left and opened the Slid Inn in Montana.
Nice pics and story Cameron.

MemberCameron, I’d just like to say very nicely done, love the nice browns! And that looks like a sweet rod. A lot of 3wts & lighter are used on the streams in the southern Sierras.
Eric…if you like the underwater shots, you might want snoop around the Kern River Fly Fishiers forum. Quite a few of the folks there are using the Optio Wx series cameras. I think I first read about them in a gear review Zach did, but I could be wrong. Anyway, I just got one a couple of weeks back and they are pretty cool. I must say tho, that putting it in the water the first time was a test of will.:) Just not used to being able to do that with electronics or cameras of any sort.
Again, nice shots – Darrin

Ben CochranMemberI really enjoyed those shots as well, love the underwater shots and I may need to get one of those cameras for my vest now as well, thanks lol
I lived in a small town in Michigan for a couple of years myself, a place called Oscoda. Loved every minute of it and now I miss it even more. Thanks for sharing 🙂

MemberCameron,
I meant to take nothing away from your fishing choice.Jul 5, 2007 at 4:06 am #21145Darrin Terry
MemberToo true Cameron. The first time fishing with the camera I took quite a few shots underwater. Only two were worth keeping. One of those was a decent shot, but slightly out of focus – in other words I liked it despite its problems. The other would have been very nice I think, but digital shutter lag did me in. I laughed when I saw it. Focus was great, color too. The fish dove after pressing the button completely. Nice shot of its back though. ::)
Just have to keep catching fish I guess. I noticed you’re using the W20 by the way, I just got the W30. So far I really like it, especially on the water. Fits in almost any pocket + 7.1 MP + Waterproof = NO CAMERA BAG. 🙂 🙂

David AndersonMemberQuick question ( off topic sorry )
What’s a yellow Fenwick ?
If it’s a must have rod – do you guys have a link ?Thanks.

Cameron MortensonMemberDarrin…I received the W20 for Christmas…and of course the W30 came out right after that. I’ve heard that the W30 has some great features that are lacking on the W20. I’ve thought of trying to sell mine and getting a W30…but then the W40 will come out…and the whole cycle will start again.
David…I am not sure that this rod is “a must have rod”…but I am intrigued with it nonthless. Several of the members on the Fiberglass Flyrodders forum have them and they are well thought of. And I have a soft spot for yellow fiberglass rods since my first was an Eagle Claw Featherlight…ha.
This thread has the links for purchasing these Japanese yellow Fenwick fly rods.
