Hey great interview. I just wanted to correct a few mistakes in the interview as i am guide here in hokkaido.
1. Sea run salmon (sakura, coho, chum) fishing in rivers is strictly prohibited in all rivers. On two hokkaido rivers you can buy a fast selling permit and go for it.
2. In the main islands, 99%of rivers require a permit to buy from fisheries. However in hokkaido, no permit is required on 99% of the rivers. It is required in some areas like akan, shumarinai etc
There are however a lot of rivers classed as natural reserve where all fishing is prohibited.
3. Be careful of hokkaido brown bear!
4. Amemasu is the sea run white spotted char, landlocked white spotted char is the iwana. They are fairly difderent is shape and color. The amasu can reach up. To 80cm while his river counterpart rarely goes over 50cm.
5. Rainbow trout and brown trouts were stocked in most rivers in the 80s. They are not narive from. This part of the globe.
Rainbow can exceed 80cm in some rivers and lake and they guve an amazing fight!. Most brown will stay close to the sea and run between sea and river.
6. A lot more salmonids can be caught. Including oshorokoma(japanese dolly varden) and even brook trouts in the east of the island.
Japan mainland host imago and a lotnpf endemic char that are really pretty and fun to catch!
