Word is that the BIIX will be replaced with the BIIIX. Would love to hear more details but I have heard the new rods are sweet with more power in the mid and butt than the BIIX (which changed the industry!).
I really like the BIIX series in the 8 1.2 footers but felt the 9 footer were a bit sloppy. Sounds like this new series is beefed up a bit but still having a nice soft tip.
I hate that! I’m sure that there will be improvements that necessitate a revamp, but to me, it sounds like they are developing new model to sell more rods.
Personally I respect Winston for making “sloppy” rods for trout and I hate the fact that double rig indicator nymphing has taken priority over unrolling a leader with a dry fly! (until you get into 6 weight +)
The BIIX in a 5wt is a great rod for double duty and speeding/stiffening it up is IMHO why they developed the BII-MX!
I figured you would know the inside scoop. What I heard what they took the BIIX and just beefed up the mid and butt sections a bit but not a radical new design.
I’m not saying this is wrong, but I would be surprised. My understanding is that Winston was looking to hire a rod designer all last year, which would have been in the middle of their product cycle. If they did get a new rod designed, it will be interesting to see how different it really is.
Well, lets keep in mind that all of the speculation on the web is just that speculation. Winston did fine tune the IM6 rods, you know the ones we call WTs today. This “improvement” could be no more than a fine tuning that does not turn the Biiix into a fast rod. After all, if you want a fast Winston rod cast a B2mx. Time will tell.
