Mar 13, 2013 at 2:48 pm #6194Zach Matthews The Itinerant AnglerAnyone seeing any white bass yet? Mar 13, 2013 at 11:57 pm #54476 Mike LewisMember Mike LewisMemberVery light reports I’ve heard on the hooch near Franklin and Coosa near Mayo. No luck in the place or two I have tried. Probably a week or two more I’ve gathered. I hear the sustained winter will make them run more at the same time when they do, improving the catch rate for that day rather than spreading them out. Looking forward to catching a few myself. I haven’t done the state park (chattahoochee bend) down float but would like to. Zach I caught two white bass about five years ago just south of 285 on a mepps spinner. This was late April-early May. Some guys I know in the neighborhood were fishing live small minnows over Mar 14, 2013 at 6:02 pm #54482imported_michaelw MemberMike do white bass eventually make their way all the way up the Hooch to Morgan Falls?  I had only ever heard of a run on the north end of the river, out of Lanier.
ZachThe whites are much more tolerant of the summer water conditions on the lake than are the striper, and the majority head back down after the spawn is over. I can usually tell when the whites and hybrids are running by the jonboats headed west. Its usually around April 1st every year if I remember right. Put in at the ballfields (in Franklin) and motor up. The whites are schooling so they may be anywhere between the ramp and the first set of major shoals. Fish the creek mouths (there’s a big one on the left going up). When u find them…..they usually hang out briefly then move….then you hafta find them again. I’ve always wanted to float from the new state park to Franklin in the driftboat. I’d take a kicker to speed up the float. If anyone does this float, I’d be interested in how it goes. I’m always amused at the guys in the 40G Tritons….trying to get up there. Mar 15, 2013 at 3:14 pm #54486Zach Matthews The Itinerant AnglerGood tip, thanks Steve. Member“The dogwoods start to bloom” That’s the indicator we use around here. I fish one creek in particular off one of the Hooch lakes that has a good run. Scouted this area twice before but this was the first time I tried fishing it. Took my canoe with the trolling motor and explored around a bit before I started to catch a few fish. From what I heard the bite was a bit slow but consistent, we caught 8 white bass and 2 spots. All on bladed flies or spinners. Pretty nice day to be out, really looking forward to when they turn on! Mar 25, 2013 at 11:38 pm #54491 Mar 25, 2013 at 11:38 pm #54491Zach Matthews The Itinerant AnglerNice!
