Thought I’d toss this rambling thought out- hoping to engage a discussion and learn a bit. In one of my several past careers I was an exhibiting artist with photography as the core medium, coupled with sculpture and written word all geared towards the Gallery as the final context for presentation. Some of that work is in the Canadian National Art Bank and several other collections. The images and other peices all were at the service of communicating a specific idea/concept/narrative. That form had/has it’s own syntax/logic/vocabularly beyond simply a collection of good pictures etc etc. How an audience reads work on a wall/floor is very different than how an audience reads work on a page, so the work was tailored to reflect that.. Will:

I like this question. Looking forward to the responses. Let me take a stab at it.

What makes a good standalone editorial photo essay?

I think you can look at the standards and learn: whether that be mags like Life, National Geographic, Time or excellent coffee table books like Seasons of the Bighorn, etc.

Can a photo essay be separated from the written word?

Perhaps, but text or caption gives it more cohesion which seems to be the point of an essay or composition  :).

How do YOU appraoch the task?

Much like the standard dictionary definition of essay, I want to show an analytical perspective of the subject, a speculative idea about the subject (raise questions, show conflicts or extreme views, raise difficult ethical issues), or interpret the subject for the viewer.

An essay on fly tying taking the analytical approach might show photos of the origin of furs and feathers, the steelmill where hooks are made or the milling process where thread comes from, the tiers at the vice and the finished product on the stream or in the mouth of a fish.

A speculative essay on fly tying might show an illegal side to fur trading or how avian flu might affect the fly tying materials business.

An interpretive piece might show adults helping kids learn to tie flies and then fishing with them–the joys of sharing with the next generation, etc.

Anyway. Maybe something in there you might be looking for. Maybe not.

PS I guess a good standalone piece might have some of all the above in it.

This is purely my opinion, but a good photo essay should be a cohesive set of images that, as a whole,

Ty for the input- much to ponder there. I guess I may pick a subject matter and see how many ways I can come at it, as a place to explore.
