Yeh, thanks Neal, but he recommended cutting point hooks…

So last year we had them break, not the hook, but the point breaks off on that hard mouth, admittedly, the average fish is 80 to 90 and the hooks broke on the bigger fish, over 120…

So Dean doesn’t want to use them for the deep water hooks, I am going to pres him to use them on the flats hooks.

I am tying the majority of my flies on cutting points, but agree with Dean about the deep water hooks.

Last year I had a point on a Mustard 68SZ, a spear point, roll on a 150+ fish, had it on for 7 minutes and the hook never penetrated… probably didn’t hit it hard enough… I did leave bits on my fighting glove in the line, still there, embedded for life…

But the fish I did boat was on a cutting point…

I don’t know, I am tying mine on cutting points… I’ll give you the skinny when we get back…

Mike, what pound test tippet are you guys using? Maybe the 20 I use isn’t strong enough to cause the bent/broken points you are seeing. The smallest SP I use is a 4/0 so it may be a thicker hook too.

That could be it, we were just treating them like we treat GT’s, no freak’n quarter given… level 100lbs…

So by cutting points you mean the 600Sp and the Aki?

So by cutting points you mean the 600Sp and the Aki?  What about the SC17?  I think these hooks are best for bigger tarpon (over 60?).  I really like the SC15 and that does come in a heavy hook too. The fine wire one is great for smaller tarpon.

    I agree Phil.
