MemberQuick post between meetings…
I fish quite a bit in southern appalachia on those tight little creeks that feels more like a jungle tour in Vietnam. I am looking for a short stout rod – I am talking something like a 6 to 7 foot 5 wt. – Bamboo would be an answer but I am also talking back country scrambling where I do not want to grind a work of art into the mud and rocks. Call it a respect thing. I also fish the Conasauga and Upper Chattooga which has big fish and good sized water but I fish the feeders as well. All this is hiking in sort of stuff where I only want to carry one rod.
Hexagraph… Does anyone fish one and the whole idea of these rods makes me extremely curious.
Gatti… Does anyone have any experience with these.
They Both come close to fitting the bill in size and weight. BUT I have never even held one. Any other thoughts would be great.

Steve K.MemberKevin,
My Smokies rod for the jungle streams is a 3weight 6-foot Diamondglass (fiberglass) rod. It’s a slow action that will load with a minimum of line.

MemberKevin,
I don’t have any of the rods you mentioned, but I fished with a guy this past summer in some “jungle” country of upstate S.C.

MemberKevin,
IMHO, I think it would be a sign of respect for a bamboo rod if you were to drag it into those areas.

MemberI have total respect for the bamboo and love to fish it. It is really much tougher than the graphite.
I would fish a bamboo if it is in the $600 – $700 range. Less than that would be even better due to this rod is going to be abused. That is about as premium graphite as I go and I know

MemberKevin,
Philip Smith, who posts on this board makes rods in West Virginia.

MemberNot quite what you’re looking for, but I can give you my experience…
When I started fishing, I busted my Sage FLi 9′ 5wt on my very first trip to the Smokies.

Get an older Clearwater version on eBay for about $100. If you don’t like, resell it the next day for what you paid for it.
I think you’ll like it.Mar 15, 2008 at 3:25 pm #24155kevin powell
MemberMy options are open right now and Iam up for something of a change. I am going to order a glass rod because I have never tried it. If it doesnt work for me, My wife or daughter can use it.
But I am really enjoying the options you all are throwing out. The Hexagraph and Gatti question didnt get any replies which might answer my questions.

I tried my first Gatti rod about 5 years ago since then all my other brand of rods have been sold or or gathering dust in my rod closet. I have a short 7 foot rod that I love FR 705 3PA
I am a bit in a comflict of interest here because I have been selling Gatti rods for the past year due to the hight demands of people that tried my rods and wanted one for themselve and I kept selling my own personal rods I put a stop to that and started selling the rods instead of my own personal ones.
But I speak the truth when I say you cant go wrong with a GAtti fly rod

MemberFiberglass is the best option for any rod under 8 feet in length.

Chad SimcoxMemberI always preferred my 9′ rod when fishing the smokies. I have a 7’9″ 4wt that I bought to use in the smokies, but found that I couldn’t get as good of a drift with it. Then again, the short rod was ideal for hiking in and scrambling along the stream.

MemberThanks for the promo Jay, but right now I’m not taking any new rod orders for a little while. I’m backed up almost 2 years and hate to string folks along. I just do rods in my part-spare-leftover-time.
If you do decide on cane, which is a good choice as far as I’m concerned, I can provide some arbitrary taper advice. There are other makers out there putting out perfectly good rods for less than $700, but you’ve got to research it a little bit. The warranty won’t be that of graphite or glass, but the fishing will be much better 😉
I can’t make any recommendations on graphite or glass, but the Scott F series that Zach mentioned have got me a little giddy to secretly try some non-living rods again…when noone is looking of course.

MemberI second Cameron and others’ recommendation for glass.

MemberI wanted to thank everyone for the rod suggestions. I am going to get more rod than I was going after but the “Idea” behind the rod kind of grew. I have never fished glass but after trying a few, that made my decision easy. I also went with a guy that that could customize my rod to my needs. Check out Mike McFarland and his rods. Great Guy and I really appreciate the Ideals of the independent builders. Going with Mike also gave me the opportunity to make this rod mine as well as his. AND his rods are BEAUTIFUL.
Which Rod did I order?
6′ – 5 wt. – 4 piece – Presentation Grade Spruce Creek
“Scott Style” grip because that is what I am used to
