Dec 14, 2008 at 8:05 pm #3687 clark reidMember clark reidMemberIt was just meant to be a day chasing Kahawai, Trevally and Kings with a couple of mates and turned into a very interesting adventure… “Fooling Fish” and DizzyG came over and off we went… The Kahawai were plentiful… in their thousands…

The Silver Trevally I had been nailing on bait fish schools the day before were strangely absent… Then a burley bomb dropped over the side while chasing kingfish…. (While we saw several hundred they were not inclined to bite and DizzyG was the only one with a Kingie hookup and bust off…. But that burley bomb attracted some interesting guests…. Firstly a blue shark… I think I hooked him first… he busted me… then I hooked him second… he busted me…. (We were not targeting sharks and had no wire on board….) Then a small Mako turned up… I put on the “Shark Shagger” fly and presented it to him… he nailed it like a brown hits a Cicada… before it even sank…
This is actually a hook up on the Blue, but it went well with the Mako shot…
we were so focused on the craziness of a fly hooked Mako no one really picked up the camera until too late…
we wanted some jumping pics but they can wait until next time. The fly had a wire stinger and he hooked up on the back hook… we had a chance… however as he took off across the surface on his first run I carelessly stepped on loose line and we all know how that goes… SNAP! He was kind enough to do a drive by and show off his new adornment though…
The a big blue turns up… DizzyG casts the “shittiest fly in my box” to him… no wire straight heavy mono… The Blue just nails it and it’s on… we all wonder what will give first… the angler with tennis elbow… the 10 weight rod so totally under gunned, or the Blue (Not the hardest fighting Shark in the sea, but crikey… on a bloody ten weight???

I don’t know who shagged harder… the Shark or DiggyG
An outstanding capture… most especially on the ten wieght… back for those Mako’s later this week… You can judge a man by the size of things which annoy him. That is one hell of an advertisement for that 10wt. rod whoever made it. It’s bent like a whores back at a bachelor party. Way to go down there! Thanks for sharing. Chad Dec 15, 2008 at 7:28 pm #31762Daryl Human MemberOut of interest – what you are guys using? Kilwel? And the reels? Dec 15, 2008 at 7:31 pm #31763Darrin Terry MemberNice report, Clark. Fun read. Blues may not be the hardest fighting shark as you say, but they are one of the prettiest sharks around. I would love to catch one someday and fortunately they are abundant off the coast here in California. Thanks for sharing this. 🙂 That is one hell of an advertisement for that 10wt. rod whoever made it. It’s bent like a whores back at a bachelor party. Oh so descriptive. ;D Dec 15, 2008 at 8:08 pm #31764 clark reidMember clark reidMemberWe’re all dedicated Sage guys… Me more than the other two, an endorsee down here and on Team Sage. We were actually laughing about it at the begining of the day as we put the rods up… eight rods, 3 anglers all Sage. The rod with the mega bend is a RPLXi #10… the one in the shot with me is the #12 FLi (A rod I instigated going into production)… The reels are a mix of Sage, Lamson, and Abel. Can’t remember what was on what to be honest… You can bend a well made rod well into the butt if you bend it right… Low and flat and make the strongest part of the rod do the work… I was taught by Morsie and it stands me in great stead!
