MemberI would ban cell phones from being within 100 yards of a river. And if a fisherman brought a cell phone onto the river or on a boat, and proceeded to conduct business on the phone, he/she would receive a 1 year ban from fishing. What do you all think?

MemberWithout my cell phone I would never fish again. I’m that guy who’s always taking phone calls on the river; it’s the only way for me unfortunately.

I was just kidding in my reply above. I certainly understand people who are on call.

MemberOne of the reasons that John Voelker (aka Robert Traver) gave for fishing in his “Testament of a Fisherman” is
. . . because mercifully there are no telephones on trout waters . . .
Much has changed in the near 50 years since the judge wrote those words, but the spirit of his message still rings true.
HOWEVER, it is a good thing that cell phones allow people like Neal to fish AND fix us when we break.

MemberI detest hearing cell chatter as much as the next guy, and I would certainly condone any hazing given to the offender. However, many of us fish some remote spots where accidents can and do happen. Assuming I had cell coverage, I would have my phone on me as a safety precaution in case a rescue was needed. I would hate to leave a buddy stranded somewhere while I humped it back x amount of miles to the truck to retrieve my phone and call in some help.
As far as MP3 players or iPods, if a guy/gal wants to listen to their music while fishing it is not my business. It would be different if they were blaring tunes from a sound system they rigged up and set on the banks.
The argument is continually made that we do what we do to get away from the trappings of daily life; one of which is technology. But we seem to forget that (our love, if not dependence, of tech.) when we get the latest carbon fiber rod or machined aluminum reel.

MemberAs a follow up, I must admit that fishing on my own without a cell phone is truly God’s gift of relaxation.
Technology sucks 😮
Here is a picture from this past weekend on the Holston River.

MemberI carry mine with me, but I never intend to use it. I usually float or fish pretty far from the car so I dont want to leave any valuables in an unattended vehicle. Cheers.

MemberI’m tied to mine all week 24-7, d**n me all to h*ll if im going to carry it on the water, where 90% of the time it wouldn’t work anyway where I fish.

MemberSometimes I forget the camera and the iphone camera helps me prove that I was fishing and caught something.
I like the feeling of safety with the phone, but I never count on it. I always let a responsible person know where I am going and when I will return. At least I hope my wife is responsible.

MemberI keep the cell handy for emergencies only….
Last year I spent 7 nights backpacking with no cells, mp3’s or radios…we had no contact with outside world….it was one of the best experiences of my life but I must admit it took at least a day or two to get comfy not looking at my iPhone every 5 minutes.

MemberIf you are overhearing conversations about Aunt Martha’s gall bladder surgery on the river, then you should try not fishing right on top of other anglers.
