I have had the last four days off and fully intended to spend at least part of each of them fishing. I held off because we desperately need some rain to get the streams up and fishing properly for this time of year. I got a bunch of work done around the house instead.

Today was my last day, so I headed out at 5:30 and fished the only stream with water. It was low and clear, but is still big enough and has enough base to draw and keep the fish. Not ideal, but good enough. I told myself to just enjoy a few hours outside. I want to really hone my high stick presentation and loose the indicator. I had all intentions of this being a training day and didn’t have my hopes up too high.

I caught a bunch of little guys(12-15 inches) and then broke off a good fish that jumped several times before saying so long. I had a nice walk up and down my favorite stretch of that particular stream and really enjoyed the fall colors that are in full swing.

I was ready to pack it in about 9:30 when the sun really hit the water and I changed flies one last time to a size 10 black stone of my creation. On my second drift I hit the mother of all fish. I saw backing outside my guides three different times before I got a glimpse of her. Mint silver and just huge. The 4X FC Frog Hair held and a few minutes later I landed the biggest Steelhead I have ever personally seen.

I admired her for a second and after a fleeting desire to keep her I released her. It doesn’t matter that I didn’t have a camera, tape measure or a witness. The memory of that fish is seared in to my brain cells.
