Just back from a few days leisuring on the South Carolina coast outside of Charleston and in my down time I picked up a book called Traver On Fishing.

    Ain’t Robert grand?
Not very many could spin a yarn like him.

Coolest thing about John Voelker – he was a Michigan Supreme Court Justice from 1957 on, as well as a flyfisherman and author.

I see what you are saying…I am also a big Gierach fan…but it is interesting to see that things weren’t all that different back then…the pursuit of trout in wild places…the fly gear though improved is really much the same…and the common thread that a trout rising to a well presented dry fly still stirs something deep within us all…

I guess I also have a certain pull to authors such as Traver and Hemingway since I grew up in Michigan…catching my first trout on from the “Holy Water” of the AuSable River on an old Heddon bamboo rod and dry fly…

These writers and others remind and inspire us why we steal away to sacred places in the pursuit of trout…

I was shocked reading Geirachs latest, Still Life with a Brook Trou and was shocked he said a lot more than how much coffe he drank with A.J.

I was more shocked with the cover art for the book…the shadow of the angler is of a spin fisherman…nothing against that segment of the sport…but Gierach tells story after story about using the glorious cane rods…only to have the clip art on his latest book be of a hardware tosser…

I wonder who in the chain of putting that book cover together made that mistake…and how it wasn’t caught before going to press…

    Cameron-

It could have been an effort to increase sales.

For real! I thought I latched on to something when I got a signed copy of that book and cover. Now, every store I see that book in has the same misprint on the cover… even the ‘big box’ book stores. :-[

🙂 William Douglas, former Supreme Court Justice, was a Fly fisherman. I remember reading about how during some “dull cases” he would daydream about fishing. Also, don’t forget some great books by Harry Middleton. Silver Doc
