I am looking for a 9wt 9ft rod for inshore salt water, big streamers for trout, and Carp. Which rod would you chose, Clouser, Mangrove, or TICR x. I love TFO rods and have several others in 4-5-6 wt, plus the I feel that for the money they are hard to beat. If you have another rod that is better at what I am looking for please suggest it. I have not cast any of these 3 rods yet and will not have a chance to before I buy.

Howdy Billy – Clouser and Mangrove actions are similar with the Mangrove a touch faster and more butt powerful. X rods are often uplined and used for shooting heads with around 350 for the 9 weight. If you want, just give us a call and someone here will gladly talk you through the differences and how they relate to your casting style and intended uses. Thanks for owning our rods!

Hey Rick! Great to see you man. Billy, you couldn’t get a more authoritative answer than that.

    Thanks again Rick.

FWIW I love the TiCr series dating back to the original TiCr, but those rods probably are a little stiff for the kinds of presentation you’ll need for carp. They would be excellent for surf fishing, for example for stripers or ladyfish, because they’re really really durable.

That is awesome. Thanks so much. I believe I am going to start with the Mangrove. I can’t wait to get it and start setting it up. Then it will be time to hit the water.

Well I got to give the X a try this weekend. A friend and I went to the Little Red and he brought his X 8w with him. I got to throw some streamers on it and it really impressed me. I did see how it would be hard to cast a more delicate fly to a carp. I am still going to get a 9w in the Mangrove. I will post how I feel about it once I have got it and spent some time on the water with it.

Since I guide for carp here in North Texas, I have a bit of experience on this one. I use the Mangrove for carp, then load up and go to the coast and use it for reds there (in 8wt actually). Great at the short tight shots, and still gets out there. Just about every line of rods ever built has what I call a “sweet spot” where weight and taper are in best harmony. I think it’s the 8 for Mangrove. Honestly though, I am having a complete blast with the Sage Bolt in a 6wt these days!
