Lit up the Gheenoe

I have largely avoided mods on the Gheenoe since the build was finished, but since I am now planning to use it for night fishing on Lanier, I felt I needed to beef up the lights and electronics a little bit. I’ve added a 12″ red and 12″ green LED strip up under the front gunnels, as well as a set of red LED string lights inside the main compartment, mostly so I don’t put a foot wrong and step off the boat. I’ve ditched my crappy screw-on Red/Green flashlight for the front light, but I’ve kept my rear white light system. It’s a PVC pipe sturdily anchored to the mid-line of the motor using a very strong industrial zip tie with a hole drilled through a pipe fitting. All I do is drop a small flashlight in the top of the pipe, wrapped for tape for a snug fit, and then the flashlight gets a dome I bought off eBay to diffuse that LED light. Works great and stays out of the way of the motor while running.

All told I am relying on I think 8 AA batteries and a marine battery which runs the trolling motor, fishfinder, and front lights. Cost was pretty minimal – less than $50 across the board. LED lights are truly cheap. My only regret is that I didn’t do this when I built the boat so I could have concealed everything even more than I did.

Here’s a view showing the front red light. It’s bright as the dickens and kind of overwhelms the iPhone. I’ll get better pics this weekend.
