Interview: Scott Fly Rod President Jim Bartschi on Rod-Making and the G2
Jim Bartschi is Scott’s main rod designer and President. He’s been on the show several times and is a friend. Lately he has been on an absolute tear–his S4 and S4s series were very good; the Radian was exceptional, and last year’s Tidal is the absolute best mid-market rod I’ve ever thrown. Given what he was working with and the price point, the Tidal might be the stand-out product in the entire industry right now.
I will also say I’m aware of what’s coming next and it’s going to be another round of Radian-level success. Nice to hear Jim’s thoughts on the topic of rod design here.
If I were to sum up his comments, I would say that designing fly rods at that level is craft stacked on top of science. Science gets you 80% of the way there, but the last 20% is where actual artisans with skill and experience can excel above their competition, and that’s what Bartschi is: an artist at what he does.
